Postdoctoral researcher in experimental Particle Physics: Searching for Dark Matter in proton-proton collisions

Postdoctoral researcher in experimental Particle Physics: Searching for Dark Matter in proton-proton collisions

Job description

Postdoctoral researcher in experimental Particle Physics: Searching for Dark Matter in proton-proton collisions

The High Energy Physics group at ETH Zurich invites applications for the following opening in the group of Prof. Annapaola de Cosa.
Project background

The research group of Prof. de Cosa is engaged in the search for new physics phenomena in proton-proton collision data collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at CERN. In particular, the group is looking for signs of Dark Matter production manifesting through unconventional signatures hidden in a sea of background. The group is also actively involved in the monitoring and operations of the CMS Pixel detector, and in the study of the detector radiation damage evolution.
Job description

The objective of this project is to search for non-WIMP Dark Matter candidates in LHC collisions by looking for partially invisible jets of particles produced in the showering of dark quarks, and hiding in the overwhelming background of Standard Model multi-jet data. The development of new tools making use of modern machine learning techniques for reconstruction and identification of such challenging signature will be pivotal for isolating DM-like data. The study of heavy-flavour enriched dark jets is also envisaged. Optimal performance of the CMS Pixel detector during the 3rd LHC data-taking period will be fundamental for the reconstruction of secondary vertices and, hence, for the identification of bottom-enriched jets. The successful candidate is expected to give leading and original contribution in both data analysis and detector related work, and to participate in teaching activities at the ETH Zurich. The position is based at CERN (Geneva) with frequent travels to Zurich and the appointment is limited to three years with the possibility of extension.
Your profile

Candidates for this position should preferably have a background in high energy physics. Expertise in machine learning methods, jet reconstruction techniques, software development and detector operations are an asset.
ETH Zurich

ETH Zurich is one of the world’s leading universities specialising in science and technology. We are renowned for our excellent education, cutting-edge fundamental research and direct transfer of new knowledge into society. Over 30,000 people from more than 120 countries find our university to be a place that promotes independent thinking and an environment that inspires excellence. Interested?

Applicants should provide a motivation letter, a curriculum vitae and a statement of research interests through our online application portal. Applicants should also arrange for at least three letters of reference to be sent to adecosa@ethz.ch.

The review of incoming applications will start immediately and will continue until a suitable candidate is identified. We suggest to apply by mid May to ensure full consideration.
